Hibernation: poikilotherms

چکیده
Introduction For cold-blooded or poikilothermic animals, winter presents challenges to survival. Since the body temperature (Tb) of poikilotherms is usually very close to that of their surrounding environment, the risk of death from freezing is very real when temperatures drop below 0°C. Food is also scare during the winter and some animals also have limited mobility because the cold can make muscle movements slow or even induce a cold coma. It is not surprising, then, that few poikilothermic animals are active during the winter but protective measures must be in place to allow survival of prolonged cold exposures over a hibernation season that may stretch as long as 9-10 months in polar and alpine regions.

The Effects of Environment and Physiological Cyclicity on the Immune System of Viperinae
One of the important aspects of species' survival is connected with global climate changes, which also conditions the epidemiology of infectious diseases. Poikilotherms are exposed, as other species, to climatic influence, especially due to their physiological peculiarities such as important stages of their life cycle: hibernation, shedding, and active phase. The immune system serves as an accu...

An induction trend may appear at any time during the latter part of arousal. It may lead ...
متن کاملBody temperature, rate of biosynthesis, and evolution of genome size.
An optimality model relating the rate of biosynthesis to body temperature and gene duplication is presented to account for several observed patterns of genome size variation. The model predicts (1) that poikilotherms living in a warm climate should have a smaller genome than poikilotherms living in a cold climate, (2) that homeotherms should have a small genome as well as a small variation in g...
متن کاملGigantism, temperature and metabolic rate in terrestrial poikilotherms.
The mechanisms dictating upper limits to animal body size are not well understood. We have analysed body length data for the largest representatives of 24 taxa of terrestrial poikilotherms from tropical, temperate and polar environments. We find that poikilothermic giants on land become two-three times shorter per each 10 degrees of decrease in ambient temperature. We quantify that this diminut...
